Invisalign®

For patients with crooked teeth or a poor bite, metal braces are often considered irritating at best and downright painful at worst. The good news is modern orthodontic treatments like Invisalign® can offer a more comfortable, efficient, and discreet way to straighten your teeth than more traditional approaches. By gently guiding teeth into the proper positioning using clear, flexible aligners, Invisalign® can straighten your smile and bite without the usual inconveniences of braces. At our Staten Island practice, talented cosmetic dentist Liana Stein, DDS can develop your Invisalign® treatment plan to address gaps, crowding, jaw misalignments, and general crookedness that may be detracting from your smile.

What is Invisalign®?

Invisalign® is a teeth-straightening system that addresses orthodontic concerns using a series of transparent, thermoplastic aligners, which progressively guide teeth into a healthier positioning over several months. Aligners are switched out every two weeks according to each person’s dental plan until the desired result is achieved, giving patients a straight, even, and well-aligned smile by the end of their treatment. Thanks to the removable nature of Invisalign® aligners, patients can still eat all of their favorite foods while actively undergoing treatment!

How Can Invisalign® Improve My Smile?

Invisalign® is known for discreetly straightening a patient’s teeth, allowing you to undergo treatment without having your smile obscured by metal wiring and brackets. Invisalign® can correct many of the issues usually treated with traditional metal braces, such as:

  • Underbites
  • Overbites
  • Cross bites
  • Open bites
  • Gaps between teeth
  • Overcrowding and misalignments

Your dentist will listen carefully to your goals and examine your teeth and gums to determine whether you would benefit from Invisalign®. After completing their Invisalign® treatment, many individuals opt for teeth whitening to put the finishing touches on their new smile.

Is Invisalign® Right for Me?

Invisalign® may be a good option for individuals seeking a more discreet and comfortable way to straighten their teeth without the appearance or lifestyle restrictions of traditional braces. These clear aligners are commonly used to treat mild to moderate orthodontic concerns, including crowded teeth, gaps, overbites, underbites, and crossbites.

Since Invisalign® aligners are custom-made and removable, they offer greater convenience for eating, brushing, and flossing, making them appealing to adults and teens who want flexibility in their daily routines. Ideal candidates are generally committed to wearing their aligners for the recommended 20 to 22 hours per day and are able to follow their treatment plan consistently. A comprehensive orthodontic evaluation is necessary to determine whether Invisalign® can effectively address your specific alignment issues or whether alternative treatments may be more appropriate.

Invisalign® vs. Braces

Invisalign® and traditional braces are both effective orthodontic treatments, but they differ in appearance, comfort, and their impact on your lifestyle. Invisalign® uses a series of clear, removable aligners that gradually shift teeth into proper alignment, making it a more subtle option that can be undetectable when worn.

Traditional braces, on the other hand, use metal or ceramic brackets and wires that are fixed to the teeth and adjusted periodically by an orthodontist. While braces may be better suited for complex or severe alignment issues in select cases, Invisalign® offers advantages such as easier oral hygiene, fewer food restrictions, and typically fewer in-office visits. Treatment time for both options varies based on the complexity of the case, and the best choice ultimately depends on your needs, lifestyle preferences, and long-term goals.

How is Invisalign® Treatment Performed?

The Invisalign® process starts with an evaluation of your teeth, gums, and bite. Dr. Stein will then develop a treatment plan designed to progressively guide your teeth into a straighter, healthier alignment. Invisalign® aligners are worn for 20 to 22 hours per day, with the exception of when you’re eating and cleaning your teeth. As you move onto the next aligner set, your teeth will gradually be guided into the optimal positioning until the final result is obtained.
